HONG KONG : Hong Kong singer-actress Charlene Choi has revealed that she and ex-boyfriend, singer Ronald Cheng, have split a while back, quashing recent rumours that the couple had registered their marriage in 2006, said Hong Kong media.
“I have broken up with Ronald Cheng quite some time ago,” said Choi at the Beijing premier of her new film “Beauty on Duty” on Wednesday.
The usually bubbly Choi suddenly became sullen and visibly upset when she spoke her break-up with Cheng.
“I am usually very low key when it comes to relationships but I want to officially speak out on the matter and hope that everyone will stop asking me about it.”
Choi, who is one half of the recently revived Canto-pop duo Twins, explained that they called it quits because they “understood each other and not because of marriage or third party problems”.
“It was a beautiful memory that will stay in my heart, and we are still good friends,” she added.
Rumours that Choi, 28, and Cheng, 38, were a couple surfaced after the pair worked on the film “Hidden Heroes” in 2004. In 2008, Choi appeared on a Hong Kong talk show and was said to have described Cheng as a “handsome man”. Following those events, Choi and Cheng were often photographed together, sharing meals and doing various other activities.
In early March, Cheng told Hong Kong media that his relationship with Choi was “stable and healthy” and even admitted that he once thought of marrying Choi but both parties decided to make more money and work a few years more before settling down.
Interestingly, Choi had said in a TVB interview earlier this month that she “did not deny” their relationship but “just did not wish to talk about it”.
It was only recently that Choi and Cheng were rumoured to have registered their marriage in Los Angeles some time in 2006.
While the pair has never publicly said they were an item, these events were seen by many as proof of their romantic relationship. – CNA/ha
