Soaking up the festive spirit
December 28, 2009
BOXING day (26 Dec) was celebrated with soaring spirits – a heady mix of beer and bungee with a Santarina thrown in – yesterday evening.
Santarinas at Carlsberg party who accompanied guests on bungy rides.
The second day of Christmas took off on a high note for Mr Steven Tan, 33, one of the 200 guests at the second Carlsberg Wish In A Bottle Preview Party at the Bungy Bar/G-Max at Clarke Quay.
Mr Tan, who works in the IT industry, was treated to a free bungee ride – accompanied by a Santarina.
‘It was thrilling. I wasn’t scared, but the Santarina was. She screamed and grabbed my hand very tightly,’ he said, laughing.
‘I really enjoyed the view of the skyline and the river from above and I even sang Christmas songs during the ride.’
The guests to this party had won their invites by taking part in a contest to help decide on the wish that Carlsberg will grant one of their beer drinkers, Mike Teo.
Mike and two friends had made a YouTube video asking for six wishes for the New Year.
In the spirit of the festive season, Carlsberg will grant one of Mike’s wishes.
And the wish that will be chosen is based on the most number of votes by the public.
Fifty guests who had voted for the bungee jumping wish enjoyed free GMax bungee rides with Santarinas.
Another guest who won a free bungee ride, Miss Joanna Ko, 27, an administrative assistant, made her way to the bar to get more free beer after her thrilling jump.
‘It was very scary. I need to drink more beer now to steady my nerves,’ Miss Ko said, grinning.
‘It was good to have the Santarina beside me. At least I wasn’t the only one screaming.’
There were also other thrills.
Two guests courageously volunteered to be human targets in an intoxicating shoot-out called ‘Faster Than The Bungy’ contest.
No bullets were used, however. Instead, the aim of the game was to see who could drink the most beer dished out by GI Janes using beer-filled soakers for the duration of a bungee ride.
Mr Seow Kiaw Hua, 37, a manager, who had been ‘volunteered’ by his best friend to take part, won the contest.
It was a close fight with his fellow contestant Mr Tony Tan, 28, an engineer.
Mr Seow, who enjoys drinking with his friends, claimed he can drink three jugs of beer at a go.
‘I drink only Carlsberg because it is smooth and I like the sweet aftertaste. Drinking from the soaker wasn’t that difficult because the beer was dispensed quite slowly, not like if I had to down a big glass of beer,’ said Mr Seow.
LOST BUT HAD FUN
Mr Tan, a self-professed fan of Carlsberg beer, was slightly disappointed at losing by a narrow margin.
‘I am a sore loser, but I did enjoy the game. It was a fantasy come true for me because I voted for the GI Janes with beer soakers,’ said Mr Tan.
Despite losing, he cheered up as both he and Mr Seow were each given a Carlsberg T-shirt and VIP tickets to the countdown party Celebrate 2010, which will be held at The Float@Marina Bay on 31 Dec.
It was another exciting face-off for another two guests who competed against each other in the ‘Soakers Sharp Shooters’ game.
They each wore a Carlsberg T-shirt and took aim at each other for 3 minutes with a water-filled soaker within the confines of a box.
Miss Yuxuan Chew, 24, a medical student, won. At the end of the game, her T-shirt was drier than that of her fellow contestant, Mr Dicky Lee, 30, a sales supervisor.
They also each received VIP tickets, which entitle them to take two friends along to the countdown party.
‘I am so happy I won and I am looking forward to seeing who Mike is at the countdown party,’ said Miss Chew.
She had volunteered to take part in the contest without knowing what it was about initially.
‘I thought it was a beer drinking contest, but I was even happier that it was a shooting contest. I can shoot, but I would have lost if I had to drink,’ said Miss Chew, laughing.
Although Mr Lee ended up soaking wet after the game, he enjoyed himself.
‘I had a lot of fun and I get a Carlsberg T-shirt to take home,’ he said with a chuckle.
Ten pairs of general admission tickets were also given away to winners in a lucky draw conducted during the party.
Said Mr Bart Lim, general manager of Carlsberg Singapore: ‘We decided to hold this party on Boxing Day because we know our beer drinkers need to spend time to celebrate Christmas with their families.
‘But on Saturday night, they can party with their bestpals.
‘We wanted to inject a lot of youthful energy into our brand and we are looking forward to celebrating with our beer drinkers at the countdown party.’
