SINGAPORE: Star Search judge Alex Man has resigned, days after coming under fire from the media for his performance on the show.
In a move that caught viewers and host Quan Yifeng by surprise Tuesday night, the Hong Kong actor first showed her an apology letter on live TV. “I’m very sorry for what I’ve done,” he said, urging her to read it out. An embarrassed Quan did not do so.
It wasn’t the only shocker of the night. After the six contestants in Tuesday’s quarter final episode performed, Man said in Mandarin: “Since this is my last episode as a judge, I shall say more… “, before proceeding to critique their performances.
Man stayed until the end of the show but later confirmed with reporters waiting backstage that he had resigned as judge. He also passed out two photocopies of his two-page handwritten letter to Quan, saying the media had not covered the issue from all sides.
“My performance wasn’t good, the audience is not happy about my performance, so I’ll get out,” he said with a laugh.
In the past week, Man had drawn media flak for his behaviour on the show, ranging from vague criticism to sexist comments, such as when he suggested Quan and he co-host an adult TV show in China. –
